Walloon Lake is a hamlet, or small town community, on the lake by the same name. Walloon Lake real estate was made popular in the late 1800s. Around that time John Jones, Jr. and his sons homesteaded the area. They cut railroad ties for the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railway. The area went by several names including Melrose, Bear Lake, Talcott or Tolcott, and finally Walloon Lake. The local butcher, J.R. Haas suggested the name. Many years prior a group of Walloons, French-speaking people from Belgium, had settled on the then-known Bear Lake.
